Overview

The Congo Tetra is considered by many to be the jewel of tetras in the home aquarium because of its natural beauty. They have flowing fins that some have described as shimmering and the main color tends to be silver with an orange glow.

Congo Tetras do well in a peaceful community aquarium that is well lit and moderately planted. They prefer to swim in schools of 5-8 in an aquarium that has plenty of room. It is best if this fish is the dominant species in the tank or it may become shy and reclusive.

Congo Tetras are egg layers and because of this you must make sure if breeding to separate the adults from the eggs or the eggs may be eaten. Another consideration is that the eggs of this fish are extremely vulnerable to fungus and the aquarium should be treated accordingly.

The Congo Tetra will accept many small foods such as brine shrimp or daphnia, freeze-dried bloodworms and tubifex, micro pellet food, and a high quality flake food.

Approximate Purchase Size: 1/2" to 1-1/2"

Customer Testimonials

This tetra is the most amazing fish I have ever owned. They are fun and energetic - I love them and they have not bothered any of my fish. When I had silver tipped tetra they chased this fish and ran into them, so I gave the silver tipped tetra away. I think it is not wise to put faster and smaller fish in your tanks with this fish.

This is one of my favorite tetras, their "mother-of pearl" coloring and tail extensions are so beautiful, and they are very active. When kept in a group, they swim side by side with their fins spread out showing off constantly.

I have two of these beautiful fish. I have them in a 55 gallon semi-aggressive tank and they are actually one of more dominant species in there. They are active and very colorful when older.

Received my Congo Tetra today, and was very disappointed because they are so small that "I need a looking glass to find them!" They were eating immediately and within half an hour after introduction to their new home, my 50 gallon tank, these tiny cuties were showing amazing colors and feeling right at home! They have company of 5 Turquoise Rainbows who are like 3x their size, 2 Blue German Rams and 3 Bumblebee Catfish...Am terrified that they will eat the Tetra! Anyway, these tint Congo Tetra have, like my other fish, in the course of their first 24 hours become accustomed to my hands and arms ..I do a lot of cleaning!, so they actually swim in and out and around my arms and show no fear or discomfort at all. This evening I have been watching them play, schooling like crazy back and forth, until they found out it is also fun schooling in circles {tank is 18" x 18" x 36") The Rainbows are "looking out for them, as there is always one or two near the little ones watching them. They are the most entertaining little creatures and I think they show amazing color; shiny glittering orange/gold! I was also very happy to receive them well and securely packaged and lively and happy from the start. I highly recommend the Congo Tetra!
