Overview
The Black Sand Cerith Snail Cerithium caeruleum is a hardy and sensible addition to your reef aquarium because of its appetite for several types of algae and detritus. It has an elongated spiral shell in a dark color decorated with crowns or knots that are thick and sturdy.
Most active at night, it spends most of the day in the sand substrate. But during the night, it eats algae off live rock and glass. It has a fondness for hair algae, diatoms, film algae, and frees the sand from cyanobacteria by chewing through it. When algae sources have been exhausted, it will feed on organic waste in the substrate.
Five to ten snails for each 25 gallons of water will provide enough room to roam and help keep algae under control. If algae levels are insufficient for the number of snails in the aquarium, its diet should be supplemented with sinking algae wafers.
When adding this snail to your aquarium, use the drip method of acclimation.
