Overview
The Cardinal Flower is a versatile plant highly-prized for its vibrant cardinal red blossoms that attract nectar-loving pollinators including butterflies and hummingbirds! Native to North America, this hardy perennial naturally occurs in a wide variety of ranges but primarily near a steady water source including streams, rivers, lake shores, marshes, or moist woodland area.
As long as the roots are protected from drying out, the Cardinal Flower is not too particular about soil conditions, making it a fantastic ornamental plant for water gardens, container gardens, flower gardens, pond margins, or for landscaping.
Because of its water-loving nature, the Cardinal Flower is an excellent choice for ponds and water gardens needing a boost of color and excitement. Once established, this hardy perennial will reward you with a gorgeous bouquet of showy floral spikes in mid to late summer for an invigorating burst of late-season color. In addition to a flush of vibrant cardinal red blossoms, the Cardinal Flower offers great texture and architecture with its attractive vertical growing-habit that naturally draws the eye upward to break up monotonous horizontal design elements.
For best growth, locate the Cardinal Flower in full sun to partial shade. For use in your water garden, plant in a one-gallon container and submerge the pot 2" below the pond water surface. In less than ideal conditions, the Cardinal Flower may be short lived but once established, the Cardinal Flower will thrive coming back year after year to reward you with its gorgeous blooms. May naturalize an area if planted in a well-suited location. Zones 5-11.
