Overview

The Blood Red Swordtail is an exquisite color morph of the popular Swordtails. This highly sought-after variation of Xiphophorus helleri boasts a breathtaking, saturated red coloration. The Blood Red Swordtail is a definite "must-have" fish for any livebearer enthusiast.

The male Blood Red Swordtail has short, sleek fins with a distinct extension on the lower part of the tail, resembling a sword. Even though the female does not have the distinguishing, sword-like tail, her deep red coloration makes her a showstopper. The Blood Red Swordtail makes a beautiful and graceful addition to any aquarium.

Blood Red Swordtails require an aquarium of at least 30 gallons that is well planted with plenty of room for swimming. Like other Swordtails, the Blood Red Swordtail is a jumper, so be sure to provide an adequate cover over the aquarium. Peaceful in nature, the Blood Red Swordtail is well suited for the community aquarium. Males can be aggressive toward one another so care should be taken when housing more than one. Blood Red Swordtails are livebearers and can give birth to as many as 80 fry at one time. A spawning box is recommended, or if one is not available, dense floating cover should be provided to protect the fry from the adults.

The Blood Red Swordtail is an omnivore that will eat commercially prepared flaked foods, freeze dried bloodworms, tubifex, brine shrimp, as well as algae.
