Overview
The ornamental Shaving Brush Plants are unique macroalgae you'll want in your saltwater aquarium. Don't let the Seussian shapes of these "plants" fool you. Though exotically shaped, the Penicillus species of plants are very adept at helping control excess nutrients in almost any marine or reef aquarium. In fact, just a few of these desirable members of the Bombacaceae family planted in your saltwater system can go a long way towards helping reduce nitrate and phosphate from the water column.
Brush Plants grow in sandy shallow water fields throughout the world. They have a long, tubular stalk with a multitude of long, thin "leaves" growing in a feathered fashion, usually at the tip of the stalk. For the best care, plant them in aquarium substrate in an area that is well illuminated. These Brush Plants are also well suited for refugiums and modified sumps.
Most herbivorous fish and invertebrates will not normally consume this plant, but sea urchins may uproot and consume this species. In addition, the Shaving Brush Plants will benefit from the regular addition of an iron supplement, as well as trace elements.

Cute addition. I was planning to put it in my refugium, but it is now in the front of my display tank. It brings out wonderful colors and helps to eliminate nitrates and phosphates. My only regret is not buying more than 1 to have a forest.

The "shaving brush plant" is not the one pictured, but it is prettier than the Christmas tree plant (in the picture). It not only looks great, but is a great addition to maintain great water quality and provide more structure and hiding places to your reef aquarium. They arrived in great condition, and they look fantastic in the aquarium. Spend the extra money - you will definitely want more than one in your tank!

They are wonderful. Beautiful addition to the tank. The picture doesn't do them justice. Can't wait to get more. I loved them.

Ordered two and both slowly died within a month in a 5 year old well established tank. They were much larger than the picture. I keep chaeto and ulva lettuce, so unknown why this macro algae did not fair well from the start.
